DaVinci Resolve is complex, confusing and intimidating - but it’s just software. Like all complex technologies it can be mastered if you understand the principles. Most important to the colorist is knowing what you want to do and why. It’s not that hard to learn how.

I bring an unusual background to color work in film. I don’t just ‘know a little’ about color theory or composition - I have been an exhibiting painter, published illustrator, designer, published photographer and working filmmaker for decades. I relate color and compositional issues not just back to Wes Anderson, the Wizard of Oz or Melies, but far beyond them to the history of photography and art history.

I have 20 years of classroom experience, 15 in higher education (Juniata College and Texas State University) teaching film, photography and studio art and 5 in adult education. As a teacher, my job is to to make the complex understandable. I succeed when a student leaves a session saying ‘I got this.’

We’ve all been in technology training classes in which we 'kind offollow along and get a little glimpse of what it might be to master the subject. But two weeks later we’ve forgotten it all. I don’t teach that way. The way I cover the subjects and the tools I give students will give you a solid conceptual grip on the material. You’ll keep a command of it even if you don’t use Resolve more than a few times a year.
